For bookings made directly with Kilohana Crater Expeditions, call at least 48 hours before your scheduled tour or pickup time for a full refund. If you booked through a third-party website or agency, contact them directly, as their cancellation policies apply.

Yes. Hawaii residents receive kamaʻāina rates with a valid Hawaii ID.

Yes, gift cards are available on our website. Gift cards require the authorized claim code to redeem, are non-refundable, can't be replaced if lost or stolen, and can't be exchanged for cash or applied to past purchases.

Yes. Private Kilohana Crater tours are available for families, corporate groups, wedding parties, team-building events, and reunions. Contact our team for availability and pricing.

Yes. We accommodate large groups depending on availability and fleet capacity. Advance reservations are strongly recommended for larger parties.

Kilohana Crater Expeditions is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Hawaii time. We're closed on Sundays.

The full experience is approximately 3 hours, including check-in and the safety briefing, with about 2.5 hours of drive time through Kilohana's private backcountry.

You'll ride through the historic grounds of Kilohana Plantation and Iliahi Estate, cross open pasturelands with wild cows, wind through fern valleys and native Hawaiian plants, and finish at the rim of Kilohana Crater with 360° panoramic views of Kauai's east side.

Kilohana Crater is an ancient volcanic crater in the hills above Lihue, Kauai. From the

western rim you get a 360° view spanning Kapaa, Wailua, Lihue, Mt. Haupu, and Mt.

Waialeale. Our UTV expedition is the only guided tour that takes you to the crater rim.

Yes, every tour is guided. Tours with 4 vehicles or fewer have one guide; tours with 5 or more vehicles have both a lead guide and a back guide.

Yes, this is a true off-road adventure. Expect uneven terrain, bumps, dirt roads, mud, and changing trail conditions. That's part of the fun.

Guests prone to motion sickness should take precautions before the tour. The route

includes off-road terrain, bumps, turns, and elevation changes.

Yes. Snacks and drinks are provided at the second stop of the tour. We don't provide water on the trail, so bring a reusable water bottle; a refill station is available at check-in.

Yes. We encourage everyone to use the restroom before departure, and there's also a bathroom stop about halfway through the tour at the cottage near Iliahi Estate.

Not at this time. You'll walk the grounds of Iliahi Estate while our guides share the history of this special property. We hope to offer interior tours in the future.

You can drive. Guests 18 and older with a valid physical driver's license who complete the waiver may drive our Kawasaki UTVs. Anyone who prefers not to drive is welcome to ride as a passenger.

No experience is needed. Every tour begins with a safety briefing and hands-on operating instructions, and your guide controls the pace throughout. Drivers just need to feel comfortable behind the wheel and able to follow guide instructions.

Children as young as 7 can ride as passengers, one of the lowest minimum ages for any Kauai off-road tour. All guests under 17 must be accompanied by an adult, and drivers must be at least 18.

Drivers must be at least 18 years old and present a valid, physical driver's license at check-in. Learner's permits, provisional licenses, and digital licenses do not qualify. Drivers are financially responsible for damage caused to the vehicle or property.

Yes, at designated stops, as long as the new driver is 18+, has signed the waiver, and has presented a valid physical driver's license.

Our Kawasaki UTVs seat up to six guests per vehicle, depending on group size and seating arrangement. They're ideal for families and groups who want to ride together.

Yes. All participants sign a waiver before the tour starts. You can complete it online in advance via our waiver page to speed up check-in.

Safety is our top priority. Every tour starts with a safety briefing and vehicle instruction, all tours are guided with speed controlled by the guide, and our fleet is brand-new 2026 Kawasaki UTVs built for off-road terrain. As with any off-road tour, some risk is involved, so be honest about your comfort level and physical condition before participating.

Helmets, goggles, and dust gaiters are all provided at no charge. You're welcome to bring your own helmet or eye protection if it meets safety requirements.

Yes. For safety, pregnant guests and those with heart conditions, spinal issues, or recent surgeries cannot participate. Guests with serious neck, back, or knee problems are not recommended to join due to the off-road terrain.

A UTV (side-by-side) is driven like a car, with a steering wheel, seatbelts, roll cage, and side-by-side seating for up to six people, while an ATV is a single-rider quad steered with handlebars. Our Kilohana Crater tour uses multi-passenger Kawasaki UTVs, so families and groups ride together and no motorcycle-style skills are needed.

Yes, tours run rain or shine unless conditions become unsafe (high winds, lightning, or hazardous weather). If we cancel a tour for weather, you'll receive a full refund or the option to rebook. Kauai's passing showers are part of the adventure.

The tour continues, since changing weather is part of the experience. Dress for possible rain, mud, and cooler temperatures at higher elevations, and consider packing a light rain jacket.

Wear closed-toe shoes (required, no flip-flops or sandals) and dark clothing you don't mind staining, because Kauai's famous red dirt stains permanently. Long sleeves and pants help with sun and bugs. Pack a change of clothes for after the tour, especially if you're getting back into a rental car.

Bring: a credit card to place on file for the vehicle rental, a valid physical driver's license for all drivers, closed-toe shoes, dark clothing you don't mind getting dirty, an extra change of clothes, and a reusable water bottle (refill station at check-in).

Most likely, yes. Kauai's famous red dirt, dust, mud, and changing weather are all part of the adventure. Red dirt stains, so wear dark clothing or clothes you don't mind sacrificing.

Yes. Phones and cameras are welcome; just bring protection from dust, mud, and rain (a zip bag or waterproof case works well). You're responsible for your belongings on tour.

Small bags may be allowed, but space is limited and items can get dusty, muddy, or wet. Bring only what you need and leave valuables locked in your vehicle.

Light snacks are fine, but no eating while driving or inside the UTVs. Please pack out any trash.

No. Lockers are not available on site, so leave valuables secured in your vehicle's trunk. We don't recommend bringing valuable items on tour.

We're located at Kilohana Plantation, 3-2087 Kaumualii Highway, Lihue, HI 96766, about 10 minutes from Lihue Airport, 25 minutes from Poipu, and roughly an hour from Princeville.

time for parking, check-in, waivers, and the required safety briefing.

briefing. Tours depart on schedule and can't wait for late arrivals. Late guests may be offered a reschedule based on availability, but no refunds are issued for missed tours.

Yes, free parking is available at the check-in site at Kilohana Plantation.

No. Transportation isn't currently offered, so guests arrange their own transportation to Kilohana Plantation in Lihue.

No, gratuity is not included. Tipping your tour guides is customary and always appreciated.

Guests are financially responsible for damage they cause to vehicles, rental equipment, or property while on tour. Liability may be limited by purchasing the optional Rental Protection Plan; ask our team for details.

No. Alcohol and illegal drugs are strictly prohibited on the property. Guests who arrive under the influence will not be allowed to participate and must leave the premises.

No. Smoking and vaping are not allowed on tour or in the vehicles.

No. Pets, emotional support animals, and comfort animals are not allowed on tour.

No, we don't currently offer babysitting services. Note that children 7 and up are welcome on the tour with an adult.

Kilohana Plantation is a historic 1930s estate that's home to Koloa Rum Company, the Kauaʻi Plantation Railway, Luau Kalamaku, unique shops like Malie Organics and Cane Field Clothing, and The Plantation House by Gaylord's restaurant. We recommend lunch or dinner reservations if you're dining before or after your tour. Happy hour runs 3:00-5:00 PM in the lounge.

Absolutely. Many guests pair the morning tour with lunch at The Plantation House, rum tasting at Koloa Rum Company, a plantation railway ride, or the evening luau. Mention you were on the Kilohana Crater Expedition tour for preferred seating at The Plantation House.

Yes. Our gift shop features logo wear, hats, and retail items, plus snacks, drinks, sunscreen, and bug spray available before or after your tour.
