How do I make a reservation?
Reservations may be made online or by calling our reservations team. Advance reservations are highly recommended, as tours have limited availability and may sell out ahead of time.
What is your cancellation policy?
For bookings made directly through Kilohana Crater Expeditions, guests must call at least 48 hours prior to their scheduled tour time and date, or scheduled pickup time, to be eligible for a full refund.
For bookings made through a third-party agency, website, or booking partner, all refund inquiries must be directed to the company you booked through. Their individual rules, restrictions, and cancellation policies will apply.
Is gratuity included?
Gratuity is not included in the tour price. Tipping your tour guides is customary and always appreciated.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. All participants are required to sign a waiver prior to the start of the tour.
Drivers must be at least 18 years old and present a valid, physical driver’s license before participating in the Multi-Passenger UTV Tour. Learner’s permits and provisional licenses do not qualify.
Drivers are financially responsible for any damage caused to the vehicle or property while on tour.
Can I drive, or do I have to ride as a passenger?
Guests may drive if they are at least 18 years old, have a valid physical driver’s license, complete the required waiver, and feel comfortable operating an off-road UTV. Guests who prefer not to drive are welcome to ride as passengers.
Can we switch drivers during the tour?
Driver changes may be allowed only at designated stops and only if the new driver meets all driver requirements, has signed a waiver, and has provided a valid physical driver’s license.
How many people fit in each UTV?
Our Kawasaki UTVs can accommodate up to six guests per vehicle, depending on the group size and seating arrangement.
Do tours operate in the rain?
The safety of our guests is always our top priority, and weather conditions are carefully monitored.
Tours typically operate rain or shine unless conditions are deemed unsafe, such as high winds, lightning, or other hazardous weather. Kilohana Crater Expeditions reserves the right to cancel a tour or reservation if conditions are unsafe. In the event of a weather-related cancellation by Kilohana Crater Expeditions, guests will be offered a full refund or the option to rebook for another day.
What happens if it rains during the tour?
Tours typically operate rain or shine, and changing weather is part of the adventure. We recommend dressing for possible rain, mud, and cooler conditions at higher elevations.
Are all tours guided?
Yes. All Kilohana Crater Expeditions tours are guided.
Tours with 4 vehicles or fewer require one guide.
Tours with 5 or more vehicles require both a lead guide and a back guide.
How long is the tour?
The full tour experience is approximately 3 hours, including check-in and the safety briefing. Driving time is approximately 2.5 hours.
Will any refreshments be provided?
Yes, snacks and drinks will be provided at the second stop of the tour.
Are helmets required?
Helmets, goggles, and dust gaiters are provided. Guests may also bring their own helmet or eye protection, as long as it meets safety requirements.
Are there any health restrictions for this tour?
Yes. For safety reasons, pregnant or expecting mothers and guests with heart conditions, spinal issues, or recent surgeries are not permitted to participate.
Guests with serious neck, back, or knee problems are not recommended to participate due to the off-road nature of the tour.
Is the tour bumpy?
Yes. This is an off-road adventure, so guests should expect uneven terrain, bumps, dirt roads, mud, and changing trail conditions.
Can I participate if I get motion sickness?
Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider taking precautions before the tour. The route includes off-road terrain, bumps, turns, and elevation changes.
Can guests with disabilities participate?
We do our best to accommodate guests whenever possible. For questions regarding accessibility or services for guests with disabilities, please contact us.
Is wheelchair access available?
No, this tour is not wheelchair accessible.
How old do children need to be to participate?
Children must be at least 7 years old to participate and must be accompanied by an adult.
Guests under the age of 17 must also be accompanied by an adult.
What are your hours?
Kilohana Crater Expeditions is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
We are closed on Sundays.
Are emotional support animals, comfort animals, or pets allowed?
No. Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and pets are not allowed on tour.
Are drones allowed on tour?
No. The use of drones on tour, whether for photography or any other purpose, is strictly prohibited unless the user has written contractual permission from Kilohana Crater Expeditions management.
We highly recommend bringing a camera or phone to capture the beautiful scenery along the way.
Do you offer babysitting services?
No. Kilohana Crater Expeditions does not currently offer babysitting services.
Are lockers available?
No. Lockers are not available on site. We recommend leaving valuables secured in the trunk of your vehicle. Valuable items are not recommended on tour.
Can I bring a bag or backpack?
Small bags may be allowed, but space is limited and items may get dusty, muddy, or wet. We recommend bringing only what you need and leaving valuables secured in your vehicle.
Are alcohol or drugs allowed?
No. The use of alcohol and illegal drugs is strictly prohibited on property.
Guests who arrive under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be allowed to participate and will be required to leave the premises.
Can I smoke or vape on tour?
No. Smoking and vaping are not allowed on tour or in the vehicles.
Do you offer transportation to Kilohana Crater Expeditions?
No. Transportation is not currently offered. Guests are responsible for arranging their own transportation to Kilohana Plantation.
Where do we check in?
Guests check in at Kilohana Crater Expeditions at Kilohana Plantation. Please allow enough time for parking, check-in, waivers, and the required safety briefing.
Is parking available?
Yes. Parking is available at the check-in site.`
What should I bring on tour?
We recommend bringing:
- A credit card to be placed on file for the vehicle rental
- A valid physical driver’s license for all drivers
- Covered, closed-toe footwear is highly reccomended
- Dark clothing or clothing you do not mind getting dirty
- An extra change of clothes
- A reusable water bottle (we do not provide water on tour, but a refill station is available at check-in)
Will I get dirty?
Most likely, yes. Kauaʻi’s famous red dirt, dust, mud, and changing weather are all part of the adventure. We recommend wearing dark clothing or clothing you do not mind getting dirty.
Can I bring my phone and/or camera?
Yes. Phones and cameras are welcome, but we recommend bringing protection from dust, mud, and rain. Guests are responsible for their personal belongings while on tour.
Can I bring snacks on the tour?
Light snacks may be brought, but eating while driving or inside the UTVs is not allowed. Please help us keep the property clean by packing out any trash.
Will logo wear and other items be available for purchase?
Yes. Kilohana Crater Expeditions will have a gift shop featuring logo wear, hats and other retail items available for purchase. Guests will also be able to purchase snacks, drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, and other helpful items before or after their tour.
Are there bathrooms on tour?
Yes. We encourage all guests to use the restroom prior to departure, but there will also be a bathroom stop approximately halfway through the tour at the cottage near Iliahi Estate.
Is this adventure safe?
Safety is a top priority at Kilohana Crater Expeditions.
All tours begin with a safety briefing and off-road vehicle operation instructions. Tours are guided, and vehicle speed is controlled by the guide throughout the experience.
Our fleet features brand-new 2026 Kawasaki UTV models designed for this type of off-road adventure.
As with any off-road tour, there is some risk involved. We encourage all guests to be honest about their comfort level, driving ability, and physical condition before participating.
Is this tour suitable for people who have never driven off-road before?
Yes. No prior off-road driving experience is required. All drivers receive a safety briefing and operating instructions before the tour begins. Guests should feel comfortable driving, following guide instructions, and operating the vehicle in off-road conditions.
What time should I arrive?
Please arrive at your scheduled check-in time to complete waivers and participate in the required safety briefing.
Tours leave at designated times and cannot wait for late arrivals. Late guests may be offered the option to reschedule, depending on availability, but refunds are not issued if guests arrive late and are unable to reschedule.
Return times are approximate and may vary depending on group size, weather, and trail conditions.
Can I purchase a gift card?
Yes. Gift cards are available for purchase through our website.
Gift cards cannot be redeemed without the authorized claim code. They are not redeemable for cash, cannot be replaced if lost or stolen, cannot be applied to previous purchases, cannot be used to purchase other gift cards, cannot be resold, and are non-refundable.
What happens if I damage the vehicle?
Guests are financially responsible for any damage they cause to rental equipment, vehicles, or property while on tour.
Liability may be limited by purchasing the optional Rental Protection Plan.

What will I see while on tour?
Guests will explore historic lands including Kilohana Plantation and Iliahi Estate, ride through scenic pasturelands with wild cows, visit Kilohana Crater, and experience native Hawaiian plants, beautiful backcountry scenery, and panoramic island views along the way.
Will I get to tour the inside of Iliahi Estate?
Not at this time. Guests will have the opportunity to walk the grounds of Iliahi Estate while our guides share the history and significance of this special property. We hope to offer interior tours of the estate in the future, but for now, the experience is limited to the exterior grounds.
Are private tours available?
Yes. Private tours may be available for families, corporate groups, wedding parties, VIP guests, team-building events, reunions, and other special occasions. Please contact our team for availability and pricing.
Can large groups book together?
Yes. We can accommodate groups depending on availability and fleet capacity. Advance reservations are strongly recommended for larger parties.
Do you offer kamaʻāina rates?
We are proud to offer Kama’aina rates with valid ID. Please call direct for special rates.
What else is there to do at Kilohana Plantation?
Kilohana Plantation is a historic estate where guests can experience the charm of old Hawaiʻi in a vibrant and beautiful setting.
In addition to its grand manor home and lush grounds, Kilohana Plantation is home to unique shops including Malie Organics and Cane Field Clothing, Koloa Rum Company, the popular Luau Kalamaku, the Kauaʻi Plantation Railway, and The Plantation House by Gaylord’s restaurant.
We recommend making lunch or dinner reservations if you plan to dine before or after your tour. Happy hour is offered in the lounge from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Can I make Kilohana Crater Expeditions part of a full day at Kilohana Plantation?
Yes. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the other attractions, shops, dining, and experiences at Kilohana Plantation before or after their tour.
For any dining experiences, reservations at the Plantation House are highly recommended for lunch and dinner.
